Can I use kettlebells instead of dumbbells?

January 10, 2026 by

It depends on the exercise, but you’ll still likely need bands and dumbbells, as there are very few kettlebell-specific exercise alternatives.

For many strength movements like step-ups, floor presses, rows, squats, farmer carries, deadlifts, overhead presses, and split squats, the setup and use of a kettlebell and a dumbbell are nearly identical. Because of that, it doesn’t make sense to film separate videos for each.

There also aren’t great kettlebell options for certain exercises, such as biceps curls, lateral raises, or rear delt flies, which is why you won’t see kettlebell alternatives for those movements.

Where kettlebells tend to shine is in ballistic exercises, like kettlebell swings or kettlebell cleans into back-stepping lunges. While you may see the occasional option for ballistic work, that is not the focus of this program.

The focus is strength and muscle building, and ballistic exercises are generally less effective for those goals since they require lighter loads and faster tempos. Building strength and muscle typically benefits from heavier weights and more controlled movement.

There are a handful of ballistic exercises included as alternatives where they make sense, but this is not a kettlebell-focused program.
